For God to be sovereign over His creation of all things, whether visible or invisible, He has to be all-knowing. His omniscience is not restricted to any one person in the Godhead. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all by nature omniscient.

God knows everything…….

1st John 3:20-  for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.

Note: Omniscience is one of God’s immutable attributes, which is to say, all knowledge of all things is an inherent part of His character and being. Nothing is outside of God’s sphere of knowledge. The word “omniscient” is defined as having infinite awareness, understanding and insight; it is universal and complete knowledge.

The word omniscience comes from the Latin omnis meaning “all” and scientia meaning “knowledge.”

Scripture gives several specific examples of God's omniscience.

Matthew 10:29-30 - Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

Psalm 139:1-4 - O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

Note: To understand God’s omniscience rightly, the first thing we must affirm is that God knows Himself. God’s omniscience follows from the foundation of God’s knowledge of Himself.

1st Corinthians 2:11- “For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”

-God is simple, that is, without parts or composition of any kind, and has a perfect and complete knowledge of Himself.

 Implications of God’s unlimited knowledge………

He numbers the hairs on your head. Luke 12:7

He knows your words before you speak them. Psalm 139:4

He knows your thoughts before you think them. Psalm 139:2

He knows your prayers before you pray them. Matthew 6:8

He knows when you get up in the morning and when you go to bed at night. Psalm 139:2-3

He knows everything you are going to do tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, and every moment of every day until the moment of your death. Psalm 139:16

He records every word you say and will someday call you to account for every careless, thoughtless comment. Matthew 12:36

He sees everything you do in secret, both the good and the bad. Matthew 6:4

His understanding is infinite……….

Since His knowledge is infinite, God never learns anything, nor does He forget anything. When you pray, you’re not telling God something He doesn’t know. He merely chooses to work through our prayers.

To know God, and all that God has revealed about Himself, is the highest pursuit of life. Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” A man never even starts being wise until he knows God, and a man never gains any understanding until he has the knowledge of the holy. To know God is the highest pursuit of a man’s life.
