God is eternal, He is an Infinite being; all of His characteristics should point us to an eternal and lasting hope. Psalm 147:5- Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
God exists outside of and is not limited by time or space………
Infinite simply means “without limits.” When we refer to God as "infinite," we generally refer to Him with terms like omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence (more on these in the next lessons).
God is infinite, He is also said to be transcendent, which simply means that God is exceedingly far above creation and is both greater than creation and independent of it.
Whatever is boundless must be infinite…………
Psalm 90:2- Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
There are no finite dimensions that can capture or contain God. He is ultimate, which means He has no finite bounds. Because God is ultimate, this means that He cannot have a beginning in time or an end, The power in this understanding is that He MUST be infinite and eternal.
El Olam…….
Isaiah 40:28- Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
Note: According to Isaiah 40:28, He is an Everlasting God. El Olam is another name that is translated as “God” and can be used in conjunction with other words to designate various aspects of God’s character. Olam derives from the root word ‘lm’ (which means “eternity”). Olam literally means “forever,” “eternity,” or “everlasting.” When the two words are combined… El Olam…it can be translated as “The Eternal God.”
John 4:24- God is spirit, and those who worship Him, must worship in spirit and truth.
All of God’s attributes come down to the same basic source: He is the one and only ultimate and necessary being. He is literally the source of everything else. God expresses this idea in His own words, calling Himself “I AM.” It is impossible for there to be other infinite or unlimited beings. Everything that exists apart from the only necessary being is the result of God’s creative work. Logically, every created thing must be different from God. So, it is not possible for beings to be truly “infinite” in the same sense as God since they cannot literally be God.
We can understand God being infinite in three ways.
First, God is infinite in relation to himself. We can call this God’s absolute perfection. All that God has he is, and all that God is he is ad infinitum. He possesses love and grace and sovereignty not largely or mostly or partially, but in infinite measure. His greatness is unsearchable (Psalm 145:3). His power and perfection know no limit. God does whatever he pleases, and no one can thwart His plans or purposes.
Second, God is infinite in relation to time. We can call this God’s eternity. He is without beginning and without end (1st Timothy 1:17). Unlike all created things, God has no origin and no starting point. God has always been God, even before there was matter or a universe or time as we understand time.
Third, God is infinite in relation to space. We can call this God’s immensity. He is not constrained by physicality or geographic location. The God who made everything in heaven and earth does not live in temples made by human hands (Acts 17:24). “Am I only a God nearby, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him? Declares the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth?” (Jeremiah 23:23-24). Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain God (1st Kings 8:27).
