If God is infinite, and if He is sovereign, which we know He is, then He must also be omnipotent, (ALL POWERFUL).
Job spoke of God’s power………..
Job 42:2- “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
Nowhere is God’s omnipotence seen more clearly than in creation, (Gen. 1:3). This is the way apostle Paul began his arguments in the book of Romans. He said all the world is guilty because the power of God is visible to all the world through the created order.
Romans 1:19-20- For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So that we are without excuse.
The existence, immensity, and complexity of the universe is indisputable evidence for the omnipotence of God.
God’s omnipotence extends to governments and leaders……..
Note: According to Daniel 2:21, God restrains them or lets them go their way according to His plans and purposes.
His power is unlimited in regard to Satan and his demons……..
Note: According to Job 1:12, Satan’s attack on Job was limited to only certain actions. He was restrained by God’s unlimited power.
Remember- Being omnipotent, God can do everything that is in harmony with His Holy character. The Bible reveals that He cannot do things which are contrary to His Holy character.
Jeremiah 10:13 tells us, “When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.” Jeremiah was speaking poetically, but truthfully, telling us of a God who watches over His creation and still holds the world in the palm of His hand.
According to 2nd Corinthians 12:9, the great mystery is that this power can be shared by believers who are united to God in Jesus Christ. Paul says, "Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me."
Romans 1:4 says Jesus was “declared to be the Son of God with power … by the resurrection from the dead.” The apostle Paul describes this in Ephesians 1 in a very applicative way, praying that our eyes would be open to see “his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion.”
Note: When we speak of God’s omnipotence, we are proclaiming that He not only has ultimate power over all things but He is also the source of all power. Though He sets limits on all of creation, He Himself is limitless in strength, wisdom, love, holiness, and the ability to perform His sovereign will. He is the initiator of all that exists, the only uncaused entity in all of creation. Though His power is unfathomable, we can catch a glimpse of His might by considering all He has made.
In raising Christ from the grave and transforming His body for eternity, God was exerting His strength. He displayed His omnipotence in the very center of human history. It is God’s power that continues to hold us in a state of grace despite our sin, and by His power we are kept from falling. His power will be proclaimed by all the host of heaven for all eternity!
