The Holy Spirit is not an “it,” not a “force,” and not a thing.” The Holy Spirit is deity. He is one of the Three Persons of the triune Godhead. He is God. Having the same essence, attributes, and characteristics of the other members of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit serves a varying role than that of the Father and the Son.
2nd Corinthians 3:17- Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (emancipation from bondage, true freedom).
Acts 5:3- But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and (secretly) keep back for yourself some of the proceeds (from the sale) of the land?”
The Holy Spirit is Creator……
The Holy Spirit, as a member of the triune Godhead, is Creator. He used His power to bring into existence everything from nothing.
Genesis 1:2- The earth was formless and void or a waste and emptiness, and darkness was upon the face of the deep (primeval ocean that covered the unformed earth). The Spirit of God was moving (hovering , brooding) over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:26-27- Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness (not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness), and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air; the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps and crawls on the earth.” 27- So God created man in His own image; in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Psalm 104:30- You send out Your Spirit, they are created; You renew the face of the ground.
Note: The Bible also tells us that the Holy Spirit is a divine person, a being with a mind, emotions, and a will. One fact that the Holy Spirit is God is seen in the book of Acts.
Acts 5:3-4- But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and (secretly) keep back for yourself some of the proceeds (from the sale) of the land? As long as it remained (unsold), did not remain your own (to do with as you pleased)? And after it was sold, was the money not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this act (of hypocrisy and deceit) in your heart? You have not (simply) lied to people, but to God.”
The Holy Spirit is God because He possesses the characteristics of God……..
Psalms 139:7-8- Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your Presence? 8- If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead), behold, You are there.
Note: The scripture above reveals His omnipresence.
1st Corinthians 2:10-11- For God has unveiled them and revealed them to us through the (Holy) Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things (diligently), even (sounding and measuring) the (profound) depths of God (the divine counsels and things far beyond human understanding). 11- For what person knows the thoughts and motives of a man except the man’s spirit within him? So also no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
Note: The scripture above reveals His characteristic of omniscience.
The Holy Spirit is a divine person…….
The Holy Spirit thinks and knows- 1st Corinthians 2:10
The Holy Spirit can be grieved- Ephesians 4:30
The Holy Spirit intercedes for us- Romans 8:26-27
The Holy Spirit does things according to His will- 1st Corinthians 12:7-11
The Holy Spirit is God, the third Person of the Trinity. As God, the Holy Spirit functions as the Comforter and Counselor that Jesus promised- John 14:16
-Even though God is spirit, He is also a living, personal being. Therefore, we can know Him personally. Joshua 3:10 is a great example of this.
Psalms 84:2 declares, “My heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.”
God must be a spirit in order to be infinite.
